Judgment Day Is Coming!

“I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope. My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning,” (Psalm 130:5-6). The Psalmist speaks of waiting for our Lord Jesus to come again as Judge of the world. His soul waits in hope for this day. This same person who died to wash his sins away is the very same person who is coming to judge whether he is saved or not. He is waiting “more than watchmen wait for the morning.” Just like those third shift workers eagerly wait for their work day to finish, for the time clock to punch them out, like the watchmen waiting for the sun to rise and their guard watch to finish, their work is finished – so much more the Psalmist waits for the Lord to come again. And we too are waiting for this Judgment Day to arrive.

Malachi writes, “Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and that day that is coming will set them on fire,” says the LORD Almighty. “Not a root or a branch will be left to them,” (4:1). Judgment Day is coming and hell will be burning hot like a furnace.

Surely the Day is coming for the unbeliever. What does God’s Word say? “Whoever does not believe will be condemned,” (Mk.16:16), -- condemned to everlasting suffering in hell. Then Jesus will say to those on his left, “Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

… Then they will go away to eternal punishment,” (Mt.25:41,46). Just think – not just punishment, but punishment that never stops. God’s Word says, “If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire,” (Re.20:15). Unbelievers will be separated from God to suffer eternal torment in the fires of hell. Surely the Day is coming for the unbeliever, and for the believer as well.

Malachi continues, “But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings,” (v.2). To revere – we worship, serve, praise, thank, adore, believe our God and Savior. God’s Word says, “Then the King will say to those on his right, “Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.” …Then…the righteous [will go away] to eternal life,” (Mt.25). St. Paul writes, “So we will be with the Lord forever,” (1Th.4:17). Psalm 23 says, “I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.” Malachi says that the sun of righteousness, Jesus Christ, heals us from eternal death in hell. Our sins are all forgiven, washed away forever. As the sun rises in the morning; --as the Son of God rose from the dead; --we too will rise on the Last Day, to life everlasting in heaven. This is God’s promise to us; this is our hope through Jesus. But we must wait. Someone once said, “The secret of patience is doing something else in the meanwhile.” While we are waiting, tell others about our hope in Jesus. Tell others to come and worship, to come and study, to come and hear the good news of forgiveness, salvation, life eternal in heaven through Jesus Christ our Savior. There still is room in heaven for them. There still is time to tell them if we do it now. There still is hope for unbelievers to come to faith in Jesus our Lord, and be saved.

Surely the Day is coming for the believer.

Heaven will be awesome. The Bible says, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them…He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away,” (Re.21:3-4). It also says, “There remains…a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for everyone who enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his,” (He.4:9-10). Finally, some rest, a rest beyond compare. God’s Word continues, “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on,” (Re.14:13). “You will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand,” (Ps.16:11). St. Paul writes, “When Christ, who is you life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory,” (Co.3:4). Fellow believers in Christ, we can eagerly wait for heaven in patience and hope. Unbelievers cannot however wait to put their faith in Jesus as their Savior – now is their time. It’s pretty clear, “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned,” (Mk.16:16). This is the season of the end-time. Judgment Day is coming…but with this “great and dreadful day of the Lord” there is also coming hope and salvation. We wait for it. And from Malachi’s day to the present day, we are thousands of days closer to that big and final day. Even so, come quickly, Lord Jesus, then we will forever “stand in joy beside you.”
